Behavioral Neuroscience

Psychology is the study of the mind, and the behaviour it produces, but scientists now know that this is controlled by the brain, so it is only by understanding the workings of the brain that we can fully understand psychology. Biopsychology (Behavioural Neuroscience) looks at how the complex workings of the brain cause behaviours in humans and animals. Behavioural neuroscientists study the structure and circuits of the brain, and the chemicals, known as neurotransmitters, which transfer messages around it. They do this in many different ways; some put people in imaging machines which allow researchers to see the blood flow around a person’s brain as they are carrying out a task, while other will be studying fruit flies (drosophila) to try to work out what role a particular neuron plays in behaviour.
